Comedians Cory Michaelis and Andrew Rivers at Liquid!

Cory Michaelis and Andrew Rivers have seen some incredible viral success with their hilarious stand-up performances and will be gracing Boise with their presence on July 1st at Liquid Laughs! Check out some of their YouTube videos to get a sneak peak at some of their great routines!

I recently had the opportunity to learn more about the comedy duo, read about the interview below!

Cory Michaelis

1. What got you interested in comedy?

Cory: A friend and I felt as though we were funny as high school teachers and decided to take a comedy class. I thought I’d do it once, and here I am, performing on a Sunday in Boise!

Andrew: My dad used to take me to comedy shows a lot. Before I even really understood them. He was in morning radio so he would watch the tonight show with Jay Leno to see what news Jay was making fun of, and I wanted to spend time with my dad so I would just watch TV with him. We watched TV sitcoms like “Titus.”
One time he took me to see Steven Wright in a big theater. Steven is well known for deadpan delivery and absurd premises. I must have been around 12 or 13. I understood the jokes but not that it was a character, I guess. We got to meet Steven backstage. I said “I have a question. Are you on drugs?” and he laughed. Might be the only time I saw him smile. A few years later I got to see his show again and fessed up to being the kid that asked if he was on drugs and he said “I remember that. That was funny.”
2. How has your experience been with traveling?

Cory: I love traveling. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some wonderful and not-so-wonderful cities and towns. Including, traveling to Las Vegas to open for my mentor Louie Anderson and work with Brad Garrett at his comedy club at the MGM Grand, filming a squeaky-clean comedy special in Provo, Utah for, comedy festivals in New York City and Los Angeles, and upcoming trips to Karachi, Pakistan and Dubai. I’ve also been to Spokane a bunch.

Andrew: I’ve been lucky enough to tour all over the world. I did a cruise ship in the Caribbean and did a tour of Europe for 2 weeks last summer. It’s a great feeling. Every once in a while you look around and pinch yourself and appreciate the fact that jokes can take you to foreign countries like Norway or Germany or Idaho. 🙂

3. Where are each of you from? Where did you get your start?
Cory: Everett, Washington, just north of Seattle, I started in the Seattle comedy scene.
Andrew: I grew up in North Bend, Washington which is 30 minutes east of Seattle. At least it used to be. Now that the city is expanding like crazy, traffic can turn it in to an hour commute. But since I was 18, I’ve lived in the city. I started at Giggles Comedy Club in Seattle. It closed down shortly after (not because of me. I think.) and they turned it into a strip club but they didn’t change the sign. So it was “Jiggles” but with a G. French, maybe? but now the strip club closed down (not because of me) and it’s a comedy club again. Same amount of daddy issues on stage though. If you travel to Seattle, go catch a show at Laughs Comedy Club.
4. Is there anything in particular you would like the people of Boise to know? Either about yourselves, your comedy, or plans for the future?

Cory: Boise is one of my favorite cities to work. I love the landscape, the opportunities for outdoor activities – especially golf (if anyone wants to play on Monday July 2nd, let me know!) – and the downtown setup is awesome with so much fun within walking distance of Liquid Laughs. So that’s it! Oh, and also, we’re going to put on an incredibly funny show.

Andrew: I know my video teasing Idaho has a million views, but I promise I’m not a monster, I’m just having fun. It’s a beautiful state. I love living in the city, but I also love being out in rural towns and looking at the stars and wishing on them that I would sell out a comedy show on a Sunday Night at Liquid Laughs July 1st. Also – If you’ve rented my special or seen clips online, you’ll se a mostly different show in Boise. I filmed the special in August, so I’ve had plenty of time to get into more mischief and have some great stories to tell. Like about how I was Catfished or about the Canadian Stripper or my mom asking me to break the law.
Watch Andrew’s video about Idaho here. It got over 1 million views on Facebook, and I gotta say, we’re pretty excited to see what he has to say about Idaho next.

Welcome to the City of Trees, gentlemen!
